One of my very favorite places to see in Colorado is Rocky Mountain National Park and I normally stay in a town called Estes Park nearby. Estes Park is not very far from Fort Collins and Loveland and it is about an hour away from Denver.
Rocky Mountains Denver are what some people find special about the area…often you will meet people who regularly spend every weekend going to the Rocky Mountains.
I am not a skier and I don’t go hiking but I appreciate the mountains on a completely different level than those folks because I think of them (Rocky Mountains Denver) as a postcard… beautiful to look at but you cannot touch them.
Rocky Mountains are 3000 miles stretching from New Mexico in the south to British Columbia in the north. They are 300 miles wide at its widest point.
The highest elevation is Mount Elbert at 14,440 feet….and for those of you that are not very familiar with Rocky Mountains near Denver…any time a mountain is over 14,000 feet it earns the nickname “fourteener” and Colorado has something like 50 of them. But before you start thinking that 14,000 feet is freaky (not a scientific term..sorry) the fact remains that Mount Everest in the Himalayas is over 29,000 feet!
And…to put things in perspective…in the world there are over 100 mountains that are over 23,000 and 121 mountains that are over 20,000 feet!
Oh….sorry…we are back to Colorado...which is also very special...didn’t mean to make Rocky Mountains something small and unimportant.
Rocky Mountains Denver is where you can snowboard, snowshoe, hike, sight see and any number of other things that will thrill you.
One of my favorite things is to go to Estes park and rent a cabin and just relax in the peace and quiet and when I want to get some fresh air I take a long walk. Sometimes go out looking for Elk and wow...when I see one I can’t believe how they just walk anywhere they want…even the city streets and golf course. That’s normally in August or September when they are all over the place.
Elk are commonly seen but you would have to go into the Rocky Mountains to see all the other wildlife.. Grizzly Bear, Black Bear, Caribou, Mountain Lion, Mountain Goat…and more.
Some people don’t know you can go fishing in the Rocky Mountains near Denver and I think you can find bass, perch, trout and catfish.
You might want to find out about things like licenses, limits and catch and release topics.
The YMCA of the Rockies is how many people first find out about the Rocky Mountains…at the YMCA you can go on a retreat with a group or go camping..it is reasonably priced and safe.
People in Denver get so busy with their day to day life I think they forget how convenient it is to go to Estes park or one of the other areas nearby.
Of course…there are many other places besides Estes Park to experience the Rocky Mountains near Denver but I like Estes park because it is easy.
